LAWTON — I can’t claim to be an expert on Philly cheese-steak sandwiches since I have never been to Philadelphia. But I can tell you if you’re looking for a good meal, whether it’s a cheesesteak sandwich or something heartier, the PhillyHoma restaurant in Lawton is worth checking out.

James and I arrived at about 11:15 a.m., figuring we would avoid the lunch rush, but several people were already in line ahead of us.

Fortunately, the line moved quickly, and we placed our orders without much delay. James ordered a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, toasted, with a side order of onion rings. I wasn’t in the mood for a sandwich, so I went with the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. (I had heard raves about PhillyHoma’s fried mushrooms, so I added a side order to go with my meal.)

Our food arrived a short time later, and we dug in.

James raved about his sandwich, saying, “This is really good! The portion was good. The steak was juicy and flavorful.”

The breading on my chicken fried steak was not too heavy, and it was satisfyingly crunchy. The steak beneath the breading was juicy, tender and properly seasoned. The mashed potatoes that accompanied my entree were certainly acceptable, but they were overshadowed by the rest of my meal.

James also enjoyed his onion rings, and I thought my fried mushrooms were delicious.

We couldn’t resist ordering slices of cookies and cream pie, which were a delicious but not too sweet way to end the meal.

The servers were friendly and helpful, and they made our meal even more enjoyable. We didn’t feel rushed, so there was plenty of time to sit back and appreciate our lunch.

PhillyHoma is a fine addition to Lawton’s restaurant scene, and we are looking forward to our next visit.
