Police: Don’t give money to panhandlers

LAWTON – The Lawton Police Department is reminding residents not to give money to panhandlers.

A recent case involved the arrest of a man named Gheorghe Hogi for panhandling near Northwest 67th Street and Quanah Parker Trailway, according to a news release from the Lawton city manager’s office.  Authorities said they believed Hogi was part of a group that uses several tactics to lure good Samaritans into giving money to false causes.

“For instance, we know the group displays signs that portray funding is needed for a small child in a hospital,” authorities said. “This group will also pretend to be playing a violin, when it is a recording from an amplifier.”

Authorities said these nomads are panhandling as a source of income, collecting as much money as possible in Lawton before moving on to another city.

“We have many churches and nonprofits in our area whose goal is to help those less fortunate in our community,” said Police Lt. Daniel Harter. “Together, we can create a safer and more compassionate community by supporting organizations that provide effective support to those in need, rather than giving money directly to panhandlers.”
