Public improvements for Mathis Center

LAWTON – Taxpayer-financed public infrastructure improvements for a proposed Mathis Center in west Lawton will total $782,350.

  • Wells Construction of Lawton bid $68,128 for concrete work at 4800 NW Cache Road associated with the traffic signals, cross-walks, and traffic control safety measures.
  • Traffic signals at 50th Street and Cache Road, to enable westbound traffic to enter the site, will cost $270,000. The contractor, Traffic Signals Inc. of Edmond, pledged it would complete the project within 180 consecutive days after a “notice to proceed” is issued.

The signal has been designed and approved by the Traffic Commission, and the City Council approved the signalization “about a year ago,” recalled Richard Rogalski, deputy city manager for public works and public utilities.

The intersection has been the site of several traffic accidents. It is where“old” Cache Road and the Quanah Parker Trailway merge “and is often driven too fast by motorists,” city staff noted. The traffic lights will “slow things down,” and safety will be enhanced by adding crosswalks for pedestrians, city staff predicted.

Demolition of parking lots at the job site is “ready to begin,” city staff reported, and is necessary “to facilitate installation of the traffic signal.”

Approximately 16,200 vehicles pass through that intersection on Cache Road each day, traffic counts performed in 2017 by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation indicate.

  • Johnson Plumbing of Elgin bid $444,222 for a 1,232 linear-foot extension of an 8-inch sewer line with manholes, and installation of fire hydrants and 2,760 linear feet of 12-inch water main connecting to a 36-inch water main on Cache Road. The new water line will provide a “fire loop” and will boost the low pressure in that area, Rogalski said and is supported by the city fire marshal.
