Sexual assault awareness event scheduled April 3

The City of Lawton will host a Sexual Assault Awareness Event from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 3, in the City Hall Banquet Room, 212 SW Ninth St.

This event will highlight Sexual Assault Awareness Month and focus on the Lawton Police Department’s newly rebranded Special Victims Unit (SVU).

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Lawton Police Department is committed to providing high-quality service to the community, Chief James Smith said.

To enhance its efforts, the division has restructured its approach to investigating sexual assaults and crimes against children by establishing a dedicated SVU. This specialized team consists of detectives trained to handle cases of physical and sexual abuse involving both children and adults, ensuring a more focused and effective response to these sensitive crimes.

As part of the city’s Kid First Initiative, this event will emphasize the importance of raising awareness and strengthening the investigation of child abuse cases. Child abuse, in all of its forms – physical, sexual, and beyond – has lasting effects on victims. This initiative seeks to bring these issues to the forefront while reinforcing the City’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable residents.

The event will begin with a ceremony, followed by a time where attendees can visit with local and county organizations that provide vital services to victims and their families, said Caitlin Gatlin, the city’s communications manager. Refreshments will be provided.
