LAWTON - As mental health concerns rise across Oklahoma, Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce invites community members to its State of Mental Health Luncheon on Feb. 10.
Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Interim Commissioner Greg Slavonic will discuss key issues affecting mental health across the state, share insights on current initiatives, and explore ways the community can engage with and support mental wellness programs.
Slavonic brings deep leadership experience from both military and public service roles to his current position as ODMHSAS’ interim commissioner.
Retiring from the U.S. Navy, Rear Admiral Slavonic served 34 years in senior leadership roles overseeing large personnel systems, complex budgets, and major operations. His service earned multiple honors, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star medals.
Before his current appointment, he led the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs, focusing on organizational reform, fiscal accountability, and operational efficiency. His leadership style emphasizes transparency and strategic management, qualities he has brought to ODMHSAS as it faces both financial and operational headwinds.
Since his mid 2025 appointment, Slavonic has prioritized:
•Aligning agency spending with available resources.
•Conducting comprehensive contract reviews.
•Promoting accountability and improving organizational structure.
•Ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services such as crisis intervention, the 988 Lifeline, and community behavioral health clinics.
While not a clinician, Slavonic’s administrative expertise and executive leadership background offer a valuable, pragmatic perspective on strengthening Oklahoma’s behavioral health system.
Mental health continues to be a defining issue for Oklahoma, affecting families, schools, employers, law enforcement, and health care systems alike.
Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce’s State of Mental Health Luncheon offers a meaningful opportunity for dialogue and shared understanding of ongoing challenges and emerging reforms in behavioral health.
Attendees will:
•Hear about current priorities at ODMHSAS.
•Learn how fiscal reforms and operational improvements are preserving access to critical care.
•Connect local needs with state policies, helping citizens, educators, and health professionals advocate for stronger community programs.
Access to behavioral health care can shape outcomes for individuals and families, from moments of crisis to long term recovery. This luncheon invites Oklahomans to join the conversation and support a healthier future for all.
