Snyder Council calls for special election to fill vacancy

Body

SNYDER – The city of Snyder is seeking candidates to fill a longvacant seat on the Snyder City Council.

Without discussion, the council voted 3-0 Monday to approve a resolution calling for a special election to choose the next Ward 2 representative on the board. Mayor Rodney Bartlett was absent.

People who are interested in running for the seat must file their declaration of candidacy between 8 a.m. April 1 and 5 p.m. April 3, according to the resolution. Declarations of candidacy will be filed with the Kiowa County Election Board, 215 N. Lincoln St. in Hobart.

The candidates will appear on the ballot for the June 16 primary election, Kiowa County Election Board Secretary Terri Meinert said Wednesday. If none of the candidates capture at least 51% of the vote — a simple majority — the top two votegetters will advance to an Aug. 25 runoff election.

The winning candidate will complete the unexpired four-year term of former Councilman Michael Atkinson, who was appointed to the position in 2018 and resigned in 2021, according to Town Clerk Penny Ray. No one filed to run for the seat in 2023 or 2025.
