From staff reports Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.94 inches for the week of Sept. 16-22, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The Sept. 17 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 79 percent abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up seven points from the previous year, according to NASS. Additionally, 61% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, up 12 points from last year.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the lower 70s to lower 80s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork.
Here’s a snapshot of how crops fared for the week of Sept. 16-22: Small grains: Winter wheat planted reached 16%, up 10 points from the previous week but down three points from normal.
Row crops: Corn mature reached 85%, up 25 points from the previous week and 21 points from normal. Corn harvested reached 56%, up 21 points from the previous week and 33 points from normal.
Sorghum coloring reached 77%, up nine points from the previous week but down six points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 43%, up nine points from the previous week and three points from normal. Sorghum harvested reached 26 points, up eight points from the previous week and 17 points from normal.
Soybeans setting pods reached 81%, up three points from the previous week but unchanged from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 27%, up 10 points from the previous week and two points from normal.
Peanuts mature reached 52%, up eight points from the previous week and seven points from normal.
Upland cotton bolls opening reached 60%, up 19 points from the previous week and five points from normal.
Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 66%, up seven points from the previous week but down seven points from normal. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 13%, up eight points from the previous week and seven points from normal.
The second cutting of other hay reached 95%, up four points from the previous week. The third cutting of other hay reached 40%, up five points from the previous week and eight points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 64% fair to good. Livestock condition was rated at 78% good to fair.
