HOBART – The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum is offering a look into the history and art of war movies through the museum’s new exhibition, “Movies Go to War,” on display through July 30.

The exhibit features movie posters, military uniforms and content that shares the stories of classic and modern movies depicting military history from the Civil War to the War on Terror.

“War movies take you to the front lines and often beyond,” museum manager Scott Cumm said in a news release. “This special exhibition offers a look into the moviemakers who try to get it right and tell the complicated historical stories of what it means to go to war, while working with only a two to three-hour span to ensure viewers are entertained, intrigued and engaged.”

Each movie poster on display takes on a chapter of military history and shows what it felt, looked and sounded like to fly a bomber, land at Normandy on D-Day, see action from the trenches, take fire from an enemy ship or survive an ambush or bayonet charge. Movies offer a unique way to make sense of terror, blood, peril and loss and underline the courage it takes to go into battle, the brotherhood among soldiers, and he sacrifice of life, innocence and sometimes sanity.

The museum is open from 10 am. to noon and from 1-5 pm. Monday through Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, please visit TommyFranksMuseum.org.
