State averages 0.38 inch of rain in mid-March

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.38 of an inch for the week of March 13-19, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The March 14 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 66% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 26 points from last year. Additionally, 59% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 28 points from the previous year. 

Statewide temperatures averaged in the 40s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. Subsoil moisture conditions were rated very short to adequate. 

Here’s a snapshot of how crops performed for the week of March 13, according to the NASS:

Small grains: Winter wheat jointing reached 22%, up 11 points from the previous year and one point from normal. 

Rye jointing reached 8%, up three points from the previous year but down three points from normal.

Oats jointing reached 21%, up 18 points from the previous year and 16 points from normal. 

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 63% very poor to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 78% fair to good.
