Buc-ee’s, the privately-owned convenience store chain with approximately 50 stores throughout the country but none in Oklahoma, has gone to court again, suing a firm with a similar name.
The Texas-sized, Texas-based company founded in 1982 has sued Duckees, a convenience and liquor store in Kimberling City, Missouri, for trademark infringement.
It’s not the first such kind of lawsuit filed by Buc-ee’s. In 2018, it won a federal lawsuit against San Antonio’s Choke Canyon BBQ’s finger-licking alligator logo that promoted its barbecue foods. A jury agreed with Buc-ee’s that the alligator promotion had unlawfully invaded the beaver’s arena. The suit also argued the alligator logo, pictured against a round yellow backdrop, was too similar to Buc-ee’s bucktoothed beaver. Buc-ee’s also contended Choke Canyon “illegally mimicked its in-store offerings including clean bathrooms.”
Buc-ee’s has locations across Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and South Carolina.
