CORDELL – The Washita County Board of Commissioners has called for a special election to find the successor to outgoing Assessor Georgia Lawson, who recently announced that she was resigning as of March 31 due to a family relocation.
The vacancy will occur before the filing period begins for candidates seeking county offices, prompting the board to call for a special election, according to the resolution calling for the special election. The commission approved the resolution March 4.
Qualified candidates must file a declaration of candidacy with the Washita County Election Board, 111 E. Main St. in Cordell, between April 3 and 5. If more than two candidates from any political party file for the office, a special primary election will take place June 18.
If none of the candidates from each party claims more than 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be scheduled for Aug. 27. If necessary, the Nov. 5 general election will determine the winner.
