LAWTON — The new representative for Ward 6 will join the Lawton City Council this week.

After interviewing candidates for the position during a May 2 closed session, the council appointed Dr. Robert “Bob” Weger to fill the Ward 6 slot starting Tuesday. Weger will replace former Councilman Sean Fortenbaugh, who resigned in March for health reasons.

A pastor, Weger has led worship at Bible Baptist Church for the past 26 years, according to a news release from City Hall. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Institute of Biblical and International Studies.

Weger is eager to join the council, he said in the news release.

“I am excited for this opportunity to serve the Lawton community in an even greater way,” he said. “I am also looking forward to becoming more familiar with my fellow Lawtonians.”

Weger’s term begins Tuesday, May 9, with a swearing-in ceremony before the regular council meeting at 2 p.m. He will hold the seat until a successor is elected to complete Fortenbaugh’s unexpired term at the next municipal election, set for Sept. 12.

Representatives for Wards 6, 7 and 8 will be chosen in the September election. Voters who live in Ward 6 will receive two ballots: one for candidates to finish the unexpired term, and one for candidates hoping to represent Ward 6 for a three-year term starting in January.
