Absences lead to Altus councilwoman's removal

Body

ALTUS – Ward 2 Councilwoman Patricia Blackman has been removed from serving on the Altus City Council because of excessive absences from scheduled meetings.

Blackman had missed four of six meetings in a four-month period. The city charter specifies if an elected official misses more than 50% of meetings in a four-month period, they can no longer serve on the council.

The council has 60 days to appoint a replacement for Blackman’s seat. If no appointment is made within that time, an election must be held within the next 90 days.

The council was informed of Blackman’s absences at February’s meeting, City Manager Gary Jones said.

Blackman’s term expires in April 2023. She was in her first term as a council member.

Blackman reportedly missed the meetings because of health issues. She could not be reached for comment.
