Research: Employers reporting more candidate ghosting

MENLO PARK, Calif. – Candidate ghosting is taking an increasing toll on employers, according to research from the Robert Half consulting firm.

Nearly four in 10 respondents (39%) said it’s more common for job candidates to cut off communication now than it was two years ago, the firm stated. Employers hiring for technology (48%) and customer support (42%) were more likely to report a surge in ghosting.

Ghosting wasn’t the only factor making employers’ hiring plans more difficult, according to Robert Half. In the last year, more than 58% of senior managers surveyed said they have missed out on a potential hire for the following reasons:

  • The candidate wanted a more flexible schedule (40%).
  • The company took too long to make an offer (35%).
  • The company did not meet the candidate’s salary expectations (24%).

The online surveys were developed by Robert Half and conducted by independent research firms. They included responses from more than 2,300 senior managers in finance, technology, marketing and other areas at companies with 20 or more employees.
