Sheperd running for District Judge

LAWTON – Special Judge Grant Sheperd officially announced last Tuesday that he is a candidate for District Judge.

With the recent retirement of Judge Gerald Neuwirth, District 5, Office 5, is currently vacant.

A lifelong Oklahoman who received his degrees from the University of Oklahoma, Sheperd had a private practice for eight years before he was appointed a special judge for Comanche County in 2019. He has presided over thousands of misdemeanor and felony arraignments, hundreds of felony preliminary hearings and protective order cases, and thousands of small claims cases, according to a prepared statement.

“With our courts understaffed and dockets full, I will be an experienced and dedicated judge intent on firmly but fairly delivering justice for the people of southwest Oklahoma,” Sheperd said. “Now more than ever, we must ensure the courts are viewed as impartial arbitrators of the law.”

Sheperd is married to his college sweetheart, Jenny Sheperd. The couple has two young children. He is on the board of Lawton AMBUCS, a nonprofit organization that helps create mobility and independence for people with disabilities.

“My knowledge as a lawyer and judge, and my perspective as a family man and active member of our community gives me the depth and breadth of experience to make the tough decisions,” said Sheperd. “I look forward to continuing to be of service as a district judge.”

Sheperd made it clear that as a judge, he is a strict constitutionalist. “I believe in limited government, and will follow the law and not legislate from the bench,” he stated.
