TULSA – Two southwest Oklahoma teachers were among 64 educators who received grants from American Electric Power, parent of Public Service Co. of Oklahoma, for “innovative classroom approaches.”

Ranging from $100 to $500, AEP Teacher Vision Grants are “designed to make creative projects possible” for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 teachers.

Kaila Kinder, a teacher at Carnegie, announced on Facebook that her grant “will help me obtain” a Samsung tablet “to use with my new TV so that students can see notes, work out problems, and help them visually learn.”

Hobart schoolteacher Vanessa Banker wrote in her application that she will use her grant to purchase an online music curriculum subscription and songbooks for her music students, PSO Regional Communications Manager Wayne Greene said.

Oklahoma educators who live or teach in the PSO service area or in communities with major AEP facilities are eligible to apply for the grants.

“With an eye toward improving student academic achievement, AEP has a special interest in science, mathematics, technology, electrical safety and the balanced study of energy and the environment,” the company reports.

Each year the AEP Teacher Vision Grant program awards up to $70,000 across the company’s 11-state service area. Teachers in PSO’s service area received more grants this year than teachers in any other AEP service area, Greene said.
