WASHINGTON — An Oklahoma College was selected by NASA for a project designed to bring science- and math-related subjects to rural communities.
Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa was selected for its project, “Supporting STEM in Underserved Communities.”
NASA selected a variety of projects across the county totaling $12.5 million. The projects take innovative approaches to broadening student participation in science, technology, engineering, and math.
"Reaching students with authentic STEM experiences and opportunities is an investment in the workforce we'll need to meet our nation's goals in space today, and in the future," said Mike Kincaid, associate administrator for the Office of STEM Engagement at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in a prepared statement. "It's vital we continue to collaborate with educational institutions and support their efforts to bring the excitement of NASA's missions to the students in their communities."
The awards will bring spaceflight inspiration and high-priority research opportunities to students from communities underrepresented in STEM fields.
Established in 1901, the college has campuses in Tonkawa, Enid and Stillwater. Northern distinguishes itself as a leading community college in Oklahoma.
