OKLAHOMA CITY – A project to replace three bridges built more than 80 years ago on State Highway 36 north of Grandfield is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Two of the structures were built in 1938 and the other in 1939, Oklahoma Department of Transportation records show.
The biggest of the trio is a steel-reinforced concrete bridge that’s 165 feet long and 40 feet wide and spans Deep Red Creek. The other two are smaller reinforced concrete boxes over tributaries of Little Deep Red Creek, according to ODOT’S Media and Public Relations Division. The crossings are located approximately three and a half miles north of the U.S. Highway 70 junction at Grandfield, blueprints indicate.
Roadway approaching the new bridges is being widened to accommodate shoulders and guard rails, ODOT spokesman Bryce Boyer said.
The state Transportation Commission awarded a $3.3 million contract on the Tillman County project March 7 to Sewell Bros. Construction of Oklahoma City.
Traffic along the affected section of SH 36 averages approximately 650 vehicles per day, ODOT records indicate.
