Half of state experiencing moderate to exceptional drought

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 1.52 inches for the week of May 29-June 5, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The May 30 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 63% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 14 points from last year. Additionally, 50% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, up seven points from the previous year.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the low 70s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to surplus, and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short.

Here’s a look at how crops fared for the week:

Small grains: Winter wheat harvested reached 15%, up one point from the previous year and seven points from normal.

Canola coloring reached 72%, up two points from the previous year but down one point from normal.

Rye harvested reached 5%, down eight points from the previous year and five points from normal.

Oats jointing reached 89%, unchanged from the previous year but up one point from normal. Oats headed reached 72%, up eight points from the previous year and six points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 86%, up four points from the previous year and two points from normal. Corn emerged reached 64%, down five points from the previous year and six points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 32%, unchanged from the previous year but down four points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 40%, down one point from the previous year and nine points from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 18%, down one point from the previous year.

Peanuts planted reached 50%, up seven points from the previous year but down one point from normal.

Cotton planted reached 46%, down five points from the previous year but up three points from normal.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 43%, unchanged from the previous year but down 12 points from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 36%, unchanged from the previous year but down eight points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 85% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 84% good to fair.
