Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.92 inches for the first week of October, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The Oct. 3 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 63% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 37 points from last year. Additionally, 45% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 55 points from the previous year.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the low to upper 60s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short and subsoil moisture conditions were rated short to adequate. There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork.
Here’s a snapshot of how crops fared between Oct. 2 and 8:
Small grains: Winter wheat planted reached 50%, up 13 points from the previous year but down three points from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 23%, up four points from the previous year but down four points from normal.
Row crops: Corn mature reached 95%,down one point from the previous year but up two points from normal. Corn harvested for grain reached 46%, down four points from the previous year and eight points from normal.
Sorghum coloring reached 93%, down two points from the previous year and three points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 65%, down nine points from the previous year and eight points from normal. Sorghum harvested for grain reached 32%, up three points from the previous year and one point from normal.
Soybeans dropping leaves reached 50%, up one point from the previous year but down one point from normal. Soybeans harvested reached 13%, unchanged from the previous year and from normal.
Peanuts mature reached 63%, down six points from the previous year but up one point from normal. Peanuts harvested reached 5%, up one point from the previous year but down three points from normal.
Cotton bolls opening reached 82%, down six points from the previous year but up one point from normal. Cotton harvested reached 7%, up six points from the previous year and two points from normal.
Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 83%, down three points from the previous year and six points from normal. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 19%, down five points from the previous year but up five points from normal.
The third cutting of other hay reached 53%, down 26 points from the previous year and four points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 70% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 85% good to fair.
