LAWTON – The FISTA Development Trust Authority will team up with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and other partners on projects promoting the safe development and use of artificial intelligence.
The authority unanimously approved on March 5 a cooperative research and development agreement with NIST, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Under the agreement, FISTA will collaborate with other members of the institute’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium, a group studying the development and use of artificial intelligence.
The group aims to establish a new measurement science that can identify proven methods to promote safer, more trustworthy AI, according to the agreement. The institute will provide administrative and scientific supervision of the group’s research and development activities.
FISTA is prepared to play several key roles in supporting the consortium’s work, according to the agreement. Those roles include:
• A hub for advanced research. The agreement said the FISTA Innovation Park’s state-of-the-art facilities, including secure meeting spaces, make it an ideal location for conducting advanced AI safety research and development.
• Specialized testing and collaboration space, which can foster collaboration and protect sensitive information related to AI research.
• Expertise in areas related to AI safety in defense applications.
• Educational and training support. FISTA’s role in promoting economic growth and job creation through developments in the defense and tech industries, which can support the consortium’s goal of fostering innovation and responsible AI use.
