Duncan asks state agency to add airport in construction program

Duncan officials are asking the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics to include an upgrade to the Halliburton Field Airport Runway in the agency’s airport construction program for fiscal year 2028.

The Duncan City Council voted unanimously April 10 to approve a letter of intent to the agency, which promotes aviation and aerospace. The item was included in the council’s consent agenda, which consists of housekeeping items that do not require discussion and can be addressed in a single vote.

Duncan has applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for an $8.1 million grant to help cover the cost of upgrading the airport runway, estimated at $9 million, according to the letter. The city will contribute $450,000 toward the project and is asking the ODAA to supply another $450,000, for a total of $900,000.

“The city has the capacity and is committed to making available its funding share,” city officials said in the letter. “In addition, the city understands that an FY 2027 preliminary engineering report developed by the department and the FAA will ultimately determine the project scope and estimated cost.”
