ALTUS – Ward 2 City Councilman Cole McMahan resigned his position last month after taking a part-time job as Altus city attorney.

The city charter prohibits a person from holding dual offices within the city, City Manager Gary Jones said.

It was reported that the new city attorney’s annual salary is $80,000.

In his resignation letter to Mayor Robert Garrison, Jones and the rest of the rest of the city council, McMahan wrote, “It has been my pleasure to serve the City of Altus as a councilman for the past year. However, I am resigning my position effectively. Thank you for your understanding and again, it has been my pleasure serving the City of Altus alongside you all.”

The resignation letter was dated April 10.

Cole has lived in Altus most of his life and is a partner in the firm Mc-Mahan & McMahan in Altus. He has worked as a private attorney for the past eight years.

McMahan, who served as a city councilman for one year, sought office “to make a difference in the city,” he said.

McMahan graduated from Altus High School, received his associate degree from Western Oklahoma State University in Altus, graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and obtained his law degree from Western Michigan University.
