From staff reports OKLAHOMA CITY – A Veterans Campout will be held free of charge the weekend of June 1-2 at the Scipio Campground in McAlester. It is endorsed by the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs.
“This is just a way for us to recognize their (veterans) service and dedication,” said Rep. David Smith (R-Arpelar) in a press release. “I want to give them a place they can come and relax, have some fun, enjoy some free food and get to hear from other veterans as a way to thank them and encourage them in their daily lives.
Smith is an Army veteran, himself, and wants any veteran in the state and their family members or supporters to attend the campout. He hosted the first veterans campout in 2022, which drew several hundred veterans and their families from across the state.
Keynote speakers scheduled are Brig. Gen. Christopher A. Eason with the Oklahoma Air National Guard and Col. Chris Kannady, who serves as the deputy state staff judge advocate for the Oklahoma Air National Guard. Kannady is also a Republican House of Representative member from Oklahoma City.
In addition, the 45th Infantry Division will be part of the weekend, as is Erica Traxler, Commander of the VFW Department of Oklahoma. The nonprofit group Flagpoles Honoring our Veterans will also be in attendance.
Tent camping is encouraged, although there are some first-come, first-served RV spots available. Meals provided at no cost are lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning. A sunrise church service will be preached Sunday morning by Pastor Bart Patterson. Entertainment is planned for Saturday night, as well as activities and prizes throughout the campout.
The Tulsa Trail Riders are donating the campgrounds for the event. RSVPs are appreciated by calling David Smith (405) 557-7376 or emailing David.smith@okhouse.gov.
