Oklahoma averages 0.85 inches of rain in mid-May

From staff reports Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.85 inches for the week of May 13-19, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The May 14 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 33% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 23 points from last year. Additionally, 12% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 38 points from the previous year.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the upper 60s to low 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork.

Here’s a look at how crops fared for the week of May 13-19: Small grains: Winter wheat is in good condition as producers prepare for harvest.

Canola coloring reached 42%, up 12 points from the previous week and three points from normal.

Oats jointing reached 80%, up six points from the previous week and six points from normal. Oats headed reached 56%, up 16 points from the previous week and 18 points from normal.

Rye headed reached 96%, up seven points from the previous week.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 81%, up seven points from the previous week and 19 points from normal. Corn emerged reached 61%, up 12 points from the previous week and 16 points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 32%, up 10 points from the previous week and 15 points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 24%, up nine points from the previous week but down six points from normal.

Peanuts planted reached 30%, up 17 points from the previous week and eight points from normal.

Cotton planted reached 20%, up eight points from the previous week and two points from normal.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 13%, up eight points from the previous week but down two points from normal.

The first cutting of other hay reached 11%, up 11 points from the previous week but unchanged from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 88% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 89% good to fair.
