From staff reports Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.99 inches for the week of May 20-26, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The May 21 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 30% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 30 points from last year. Additionally, 11% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 39 points from the previous year.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the low to upper 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork.
Here’s a look how crops fared for the week of May 20-26: Small grains: In central Oklahoma, wheat was maturing with no significant insect or disease pressures, while in southwest Oklahoma, recent storms have affected small-grain crops with hail damage.
Winter wheat harvested reached 12%, up 12 points from the previous week and 11 points from normal.
Canola coloring reached 59%, up 17 points from the previous week and nine points from normal.
Rye harvested reached 5%, up five points from the previous week and two points from normal.
Oats jointing reached 90%, up 10 points from the previous week and from normal. Oats headed reached 65%, up nine points from previous week and 13 points from normal.
Row crops: Corn planted reached 91%, up 10 points from the previous week and 20 points from normal. Corn emerged reached 81%, up 20 points from the previous week and 24 points from normal.
Sorghum planted reached 40%, up eight points from the previous week and 18 points from normal.
Soybeans planted reached 29%, up five points from the previous week but down seven points from normal.
Peanuts planted reached 49%, up 19 points from the previous week and 17 points from normal.
Cotton planted reached 38%, up 18 points from the previous week and 12 points from normal.
Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 35%, up 22 points from the previous week and six points from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 30%, up 19 points from the previous week and six points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 87% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 89% good to fair.
