Dry weather lingers across Sooner State

From staff reports Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.18 inches for the last week of July, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The July 30 U.S. Drought Monitor Report indicated drought conditions were rated 69% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 21 points from the previous year, the NASS said. Additionally, 22% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, up four points from last year.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the lower to upper 80s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated short to adequate, and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Here’s a look at how crops fared for the last week of July: Small grains: Oats harvested reached 95%, up five points from the previous week.

Row crops: Corn silking reached 95%, up three points from the previous week and nine points from normal. Corn dough reached 51%, up 19 points from the previous week and 13 points from normal. Corn dented reached 24%, up 12 points from the previous week.

Sorghum headed reached 46%, up six points from the previous week and from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 16%, up four points from the previous week and from normal.

Soybeans blooming reached 39%, up 20 points from the previous week but down 10 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 9%, up four points from the previous week but down five points from normal.

Peanuts pegging reached 65%, up 10 points from the previous week but unchanged from normal.

Upland cotton squaring reached 95%, up four points from the previous week and seven points from normal. Upland cotton setting bolls reached 50%, up 19 points from the previous week and six points from normal.

Hay: The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 62%, up 13 points from the previous week but down two points from normal.

The second cutting of other hay reached 52%, up three points from the previous week and five points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 5%, up five points from the previous week.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 78% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 87% good to fair.
