Winter wheat unchanged from July; cotton may double 2023 crop

From staff reports Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s August 2024 Crop Production Report show Oklahoma’s winter wheat crop was left unchanged compared to the July’s totals, according to Oklahoma State Statistician Troy Marshall, who analyzed the Aug. 12 report.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that Oklahoma wheat farmers have harvested 2.7 million acres – getting a yield of 39 bushels per acre – for a total production of 105.3 million b ushels. That total is up 54% from the 2023 crop of just over 68 million bushels.

Oklahoma’s 2024 cotton crop is forecast at 430 thousand bales, 105% higher than 2023. Yields averaged 655 pounds per acre, an increase of 95 pounds since last year. Acreage harvested, at 315 thousand acres, is up 75% from last year, based on crop conditions as of Aug. 1, with critical growing conditions still ahead.
