Mid-August brings heat, little rain to Oklahoma

From staff reports Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.92 inches for the week of Aug. 12-18, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The Aug. 13 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 79% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 43 points from the previous year, according to NASS. Additionally, 41% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, up 28 points from last year.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the lower to upper 80s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Here’s a snapshot of how crops fared for the week of Aug. 12-18: Row crops: Corn dough reached 92%, up 18 points from the previous week and 30 points from normal. Corn dented reached 60%, up 17 points from the previous week and 37 points from normal.

Corn mature reached 23%, and corn harvested reached 7%.

Sorghum headed reached 63%, up nine points from the previous week but down four points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 25%, up seven points from the previous week but down one point from normal.

Soybeans blooming reached 65%, up 10 points from the previous week but down seven points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 30%, up 13 points from the previous week but down five points from normal.

Peanuts pegging reached 85%, up 12 points from the previous week and four points from normal.

Peanuts mature reached 8%, up eight points from last week and three points from normal.

Upland cotton setting bolls reached 74%, up nine points from the previous week but unchanged from normal. Upland Cotton bolls opening reached 5%, up five points from last week but unchanged from normal.

Hay: The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 81%, up nine points from the previous week but down three points from normal. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 28%, up 17 points from last week and three points from normal.

The second cutting of other hay reached 60%, up five points from the previous week but down six points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 19%, up 10 points from the previous week and 12 points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 78% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 85% good to fair.
