From staff reports Bob Rodenberger, a partner of Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, recently outlined the latest cattle market fluctuations.
He mentioned that calf prices have risen significantly and attributed the increase to the recent rainfall which has improved grazing conditions. Meanwhile, even though fewer cattle are being brought to market overall, feeder cattle prices have remained steady.
“In the last two weeks since before the rain, the calf market has jumped $100 to $150 per head higher,” he said.
If producers are struggling to provide wheat, grass or water to carry their cattle through the winter, Rodenberger noted that the high demand currently incentivizes taking cattle to town.
While the market is handling the uptick in cattle, it is still “not near as many as we were a year ago at this time, but more than we were back in the summer,” Rodenberger said. “Even though the rain has helped, we are still culling cows.”
Despite the Thanksgiving holiday, Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing still sold cattle on Nov. 25 and 26 in Oklahoma City. Apache will only hold three more sales after Thanksgiving before shutting down for a couple of weeks.
