Southwest Oklahoma Legislative Update: Senate

Body

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Kendal Sacchieri (R-Blanchard) has filed a measure in the new legislative session that would require clear labeling on ballot measures that would lead to tax increases.

Senate Bill 1116 states that any proposal put before voters must explicitly state it will result in increased taxes. All state questions, school bonds, sales tax proposals or any other proposals raising or extending tax rates must include a disclaimer stating, “This is a tax increase.”

“Sometimes, taxing jurisdictions promote a bond or sales tax proposal to its voters as ‘Free’ or ‘Tax neutral’ and that simply is not so,” Sacchieri said in a recent press release. “Nothing is free in government; it is only by your hard-earned tax dollars that it survives.”

She has also co-sponsored SB 1167 that would permit active uniform services of the United States to serve as poll workers. This will include members who are temporarily stationed in Oklahoma, as well as their spouses, regardless of their official home of record.

In an unrelated election proposal, Sen. Brent Howard (R-Altus), filed SB 536 which relates to county election boards. It would amend state law that pertains to secretary and assistant secretary’s duties and clarify their roles and responsibilities.

The bill would allow the assistant secretary to execute the secretary’s duties during absences due to illness, disqualification, recusal or other approved reasons and provides a formal process for the temporary replacement.

The First Regular Session of the 60th Oklahoma Legislature convened on Monday, Feb. 3.
