Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.40 inches for the week of May 12-18, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The NASS said the May 13 U.S. Drought Monitor Report indicated that drought conditions were rated 16% abnormal to exceptional drought, down 17 points from the previous year. Additionally, 12% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, unchanged from the previous year.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork.
Here’s a snapshot of how crops fared for the week of May 12-18: Small grains: Winter wheat headed reached 90%, up 12 points from the previous week but down two points from normal.
Canola blooming reached 95%, up 15 points from the previous week. Canola coloring reached 37%, up 15 points from the previous week but down one point from normal.
Rye headed reached 80%, up 19 points from the previous week.
Oats jointing reached 73%, up nine points from the previous week but down one point from normal. Oats headed reached 35%, up 14points from the previous week but down seven points from normal.
Row crops: Corn planted reached 69%, up 11 points from the previous week and three points from normal. Corn emerged reached 42%, up 10 points from the previous week but down four points from normal.
Sorghum planted reached 30%, up six points from the previous week and 10 points from normal.
Soybeans planted reached 37%, up eight points from the previous week and nine points from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 11%, up two points from the previous week.
Peanuts planted reached 36%, up 24 points from the previous week and 14 points from normal.
Cotton planted reached 28%, up 19 points from the previous week and nine points from normal.
Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 29%, up 24 points from the previous week and 16 points from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 7%, down four points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 81% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 84% good to fair.
