A report by the nonprofit organization SmileHub on the Best States for Environmental Protection in 2025 ranked Oklahoma 39th. The group also released a new report on the Best Charities for Environmental Protection.
SmileHub compared the eco-friendliness of all 50 states across 25 key metrics. The data set ranges from the number of environmental protection charities per capita to industrial toxins per square mile of land area to climate change vulnerability.
California, Washington, New York, Vermont and Maryland were considered the most environmentally friendly, according to SmileHub, ranking first through fifth in the survey. North Dakota, Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia and Louisiana were ranked the least environmentally friendly states.
California has the highest number of environmental protection charities per capita – 9.9 times higher than in Oklahoma, which has the lowest number.
New York, which ranked No. 3, has the highest share of workers that use ‘green’ transportation – 3 times higher than in No. 48 ranked Mississippi, which has the lowest share.
South Dakota, which ranked No. 26, has the highest share of renewable energy consumption – 18.3 times higher than No. 34 ranked Delaware, which has the lowest share.
Hawaii, which ranked No. 6, is one of the states with the highest soil quality – 27 times higher than No. 32 ranked New Mexico, which has the lowest soil quality.
