Lake Lawtonka access road agreement approved

LAWTON – Comanche County will engineer and build a 1.43-mile access road for Lake Lawtonka under an agreement with the state, which will reimburse the county for its surfacing costs.

The Board of Comanche County Commissioners voted 3-0 July 14 to approve the project agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Chairman Josh Powers was absent, but Western District foreman Kenny Kinder filled in for him.

County officials asked ODOT to approve the project and reimburse the county for the cost of surfacing the access road after it is finished, using the money that the state Transportation Commission has earmarked for the project, according to the agreement. The commission has allocated $180,000 for the project.

The proposed road will begin at the northwest section of the lake and encompass several different roads that provide access to Robinson’s Landing, according to the agreement.

In other business, the commission acknowledged the donation of K-9 Skoden, a dual-purpose police dog, to the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office.

Skoden belonged to sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Troy Glover, who has decided to retire as a K-9 handler within the sheriff’s patrol division, Glover wrote in a recent letter to Sheriff Michael Merritt.

“This decision comes after spending the better part of 25 years directly involved in the training and handling of Law Enforcement Working Dogs,” Glover said. “I have been partnered with K9 Skoden just shy of 2 years, and have many seizures and apprehensions, ranging from user level narcotics to 3.5 pounds of Methamphetamines.”
