State Labor Dept. recovers $1.25M+ in unpaid wages for FY24

From staff reports OKLAHOMA CITY –The state Labor Department announced the recovery of $1,259,228 in unpaid wages and liquidated damages for Fiscal Year 2024.

“This milestone underscores the agency’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and promoting a fair and lawful labor environment throughout the state,” Labor Commissioner Leslie Osborn said. “Every dollar recovered represents a victory for fairness and accountability.”

FY 2024 highlights

• Total wage claims filed: 801

• Total wages collected: $1,038,347

• Liquidated damages collected: $220,881

• Total recoveries: $1,259,228

• Claimants paid: 414 received back wages; 66 also received liquidated damages • Largest single recovery: $190,000 in unpaid wages Wage theft can include violations such as paying below minimum wage, denying overtime, or requiring off-the-clock work, Osborn related. “These unlawful practices can severely affect workers’ financial stability. Our agency’s enforcement efforts serve as a critical safeguard for Oklahoma workers.”

“The economic importance of wages being paid cannot be overstated,” said David Bryan, assistant general counsel and director of the Labor Department’s Employment Standards Division. “When workers receive what they’ve earned, they can pay rent, buy groceries, and support their families. This income circulates through local economies and strengthens communities across Oklahoma.”
