Lawton residents will vote on five City Council seats this year, instead of the customary three.
The annual nonpartisan primary municipal election is scheduled on Aug. 25 and a general election, if necessary, will be held Nov. 3.
Offices occupied by three incumbents and two appointees will be decided this year.
Ward 6 Councilman Bob Weger is completing his first complete term. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in May 2023 after then-Councilman Sean Fortenbaugh resigned for health reasons. Weger then ran for and won a full term in the September 2023 election.
Sherene Williams is completing her first term on the City Council as the Ward 7 representative.
And the dean of the council, Randy Warren in Ward 8, “terms out.”
Ward 1 Councilman Kirby Brown was appointed to replace Mary Ann Hankins-Booker after she stepped down Aug. 12, 2025.
And Ward 2 Councilman Taron Epps was appointed to fill the vacancy created when R.L. Smith resigned.
The winners in Wards 6, 7 and 8 will serve three-year terms. The winners in Wards 1 and 2 will serve one-year terms to complete unexpired terms.
The City Council filing period will be June 15--17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, at the Comanche County Election Board in the County Courthouse in downtown Lawton. No filing fee will be charged.
Every candidate must be a registered voter at an address within his/ her ward for at least six months prior to filing a declaration of candidacy. All five council members will be elected by voters from their specific ward.
