ELGIN — A popular pastime has become a way to benefit children across Southwest Oklahoma.

On Saturday, Nov. 6, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Southwest Oklahoma will host a “Boss of the Toss” cornhole tournament at the Elgin softball field to help abused and/or neglected kids in Comanche, Jefferson, Jackson, Stephens, Cotton, Greer and Tillman counties.

“Our last fiscal year we served 112 kids,” said CASA of Southwest Oklahoma Executive Director Wilma Whitaker. Of the seven southwestern Oklahoma counties CASA of SWOK serves, between 350 and 400 children are in need, she added.

With most CASA workers already assigned to cases, Ms. Whitaker said the organization is looking to recruit caring volunteers. Matching the right volunteer caseworker for the case is vital, she said. Each advocate undergoes hours of training before they are assigned to a case.

“We have to find the right case for the right volunteer, so it’s not easy,” she said.

Resources will be available for those interested in volunteering for the organization’s mission.

Up to 32 teams will compete for prize money in a double-elimination tournament adhering to rules outlined by the American Cornhole Organization.

Prizes are based on half of the entry fees collected. Max payout for first, second and third places are $768, $384, and $128, respectively. Entry is an $80 per team donation to CASA of Southwest Oklahoma. Teams consist of two players.

Players may pick up their packets at 10 a.m.; competition begins at 11.
