LAWTON – Funds raised by the Great Plains Republican Women’s Fashion and Variety Show held last November brought some much needed supplies to local organizations Thursday.

Dozens of women met at the Prairie Building of the Comanche County Fairgrounds to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the organization’s inception. GPRW gave gifts to two local groups.

While members regularly donate to charitable foundations of their choosing within the community, the organization recently focused its efforts on helping new families in need and our local veterans.

Rita Willoughby, executive director for The Pregnancy Resource Center of Southwest Oklahoma, accepted several larger items which can be financially burdensome to new parents. GPRW was able to raise funds to purchase several highchairs, five rear-facing car seats, two baby cribs with mattresses.

A donation of clothing and personal hygiene products was also collected for the residents at the Veterans Center. Socks, shirts, shaving cream, disposable razors, toothpaste and more were all purchased by the GPRW members.

“It just warms my heart that we’re able to do such good things to support the community,” said GPRW’s Betty Jean Beall.

Currently, Great Plains Republican Women are raffling off a handmade patriotic quilt. Tickets are $5 or five for $20. They can be purchased by contacting any member of the group.

With the election year in full swing for many state politicians, GPRW members were asked to help promote policymakers even outside the district.

“We can make phone calls, drive cars and knock doors, do mailings; there are just so many things that we can do,” said Wendy Zimmer, president of the Great Plains Republican Women.

Beginning with 14 women in 2007, a few of the charter members were recognized during the meeting. GPRW membership has fluctuated over the years. It was established to promote Conservative values, examine political candidates and policies. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month.
