LAWTON — Nine candidates, including three incumbents, are seeking seats on the Lawton City Council this year. The candidates for Wards 6, 7 and 8 filed their declarations of candidacy between July 31-Aug. 2 with the Comanche County Election Board.

LAWTON — Four Republicans and two Democrats will compete this fall for the right to replace former state Sen. John Michael Montgomery in the Senate. The six candidates are: • Dusty Deevers, Republican. A resident of Elgin, Deevers is a pastor at Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Elgin.

GriefShare support group to meet

LAWTON — Beginning Wed., Aug. 9, Cameron Baptist Church will host GriefShare, a 13-week faith-based support program designed to help people navigate through grief associated with the loss of their loved ones. Linda Purdue first began facilitating Cameron Baptist’s GriefShare in 2018.

LAWTON — United Way of Southwest Oklahoma will host its sixth annual Blue Tie Gala at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lawton.  United Way is seeking sponsors for the Wanderlust-themed event, the nonprofit organization said in a news release.

Preliminary work starts on OKCPS bond issue projects

OKLAHOMA CITY — Preliminary work has started on 11 of the projects voters in the OKC Public School District authorized in a $955 million bond issue last November. Proposition 1, which requested $936 million for school improvements, was endorsed by 64% of the district residents who voted.
