LAWTON — The Board of Comanche County Commissioners signed off Monday on the Pecan Valley Waterworks Association’s request to organize a rural water district.

The board voted 3-0 to grant the request, which will free up federal dollars for upgrades.

A private company, Pecan Valley Waterworks provides water and sewer service for the communities of Pecan Valley and Shelter Lakes, on the west side of Lawton. The company will go out of existence and be replaced by a community-owned nonprofit organization known as the Pecan Valley Rural Water District, which will continue serving those communities.

In other business, the board approved a contract with the Oklahoma City-based engineering company EST Inc., which will serve as a consultant on the Persimmon Creek bridge replacement project.

The bridge is located five miles east and three miles north of the junction of State Highways 5 and 36.
