CHICKASHA — Reconstruction of a storm-damaged intersection on the southwest side of town will take three weeks to three months to complete, Public Works Director Jim Crosby has estimated.
The City Council awarded a $287,990 contract June 20 to Mayfield Contracting, of Clinton, to repair the intersection of 14th Street and Missouri Avenue.
The intersection is at the bottom of a basin into which water from all four sides poured during a heavy rainstorm May 13.
Drains at the intersection were overloaded during the storm, causing the pavement to buckle. The manhole cover didn’t pop up to release excess water. Consequently, floodwater flowed under the asphalt street, “lifted the pavement up and dropped it back down,” City Manager Keith Johnson said.
The first time the city solicited bids on the project, no one responded; when the job was advertised a second time, Mayfield was the only contractor to submit a bid. The council followed the advice of its consulting engineer and awarded the contract to Mayfield “due to the emergency nature of this project and the lack of other responsive bids…”
The job will entail removing 390 square yards of pavement and 120 linear feet of pipe, replacing two manhole frames and cast-iron covers, replacing four drainage inlets, constructing 178 linear feet of concrete curb, laying 65 cubic yards of aggregate base, and pouring 390 square yards of concrete pavement to a thickness of nine inches.
