Grand Opening of Lawton PSC May 14

LAWTON – A grand opening of Lawton’s new Public Safety Center is scheduled for May 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The three-story structure at 100 S. Railroad Street encompasses 106,778 square feet and will house the Fire Department, the Police Department, the City Jail, and the Municipal Court.

LAWTON – Five diesel-powered vehicles will be decommissioned and replaced by the City of Lawton using nearly two-thirds of a million dollars from the settlement of a Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Lawton changes trash pickup to once-a-week

Lawton switches from twice-a-week to once-a-week trash pick-up starting April 5. Depending on where you live, refuse will be collected on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Wednesdays will be reserved for once-a-month curbside pick-up of as much as 4 cubic yards of solid waste.

Lawton changing trash pick-up to once a week

LAWTON – Residential trash collection in Lawton will transition to once-a-week pick-up on April 5. Under the new schedule, refuse will be collected: • Mondays in Area 1: north of Gore Boulevard, south of Rogers Lane and west of 38th Street. Bulk pick-up will be on the first Wednesday of the month.

Frigid temps cause broken mains, burst pipes

LAWTON – The sub-freezing temperatures that settled in Oklahoma for five days starting on Valentine’s Day wreaked havoc on Lawton’s water system that are still being addressed a month later.

LAWTON – A $20,000 grant from the Oklahoma Historical Society to finance a digital conversion/memory lab at the Lawton Public Library was accepted Tuesday by the City Council.

Upgrade of Lawton tennis courts envisioned

LAWTON – A contract to replace the aged lights at the tennis courts in Greer Park with new high-efficiency lights was awarded Tuesday by the City Council. Of the four proposals, Third Generation Electrical of Tulsa was the lowest responsive bidder and won the contract with a price of $199,371.
Museum of the Great Plains: The Frisco Railroad steam locomotive #1526 is a prominent exhibit at the Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton. The engine could haul freight but mostly pulled passenger cars. During World War II it transported military troops and served as a hospital train. In addition, Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman rode the 1526 across the nation during their election campaigns. The locomotive was manufactured in 1926 and was retired in 1952

Lawton museum funded for FY’21

LAWTON – The City Council recently earmarked half a million dollars for continued operation of the 59-year-old Museum of the Great Plains. That sum includes $475,000 from the city’s regular budget and $25,000 from the hotel/motel tax.
