LEDC: Lawton Fort Sill economic forecast good through 2024

LAWTON — Lawton has weathered the economic recession of 2020-21 and may see a strong economy in 2022, an economist said Wednesday.   “The forecast is way more optimistic than it was a year ago,” said Mark Snead, president of the Oklahoma City-based economic research firm RegionTrack.

Lawton OKs design for Goodyear Blvd. extension

LAWTON – Lawton’s plan to extend Goodyear Boulevard from the West Industrial Park northwest to connect with U.S. Highway 62, with ramp connections to provide grade-separated access to U.S. 62 and Quanah Parker Trailway, is moving to the front burner.

City OKs refinancing plan

LAWTON – Lower interest rates are prompting Lawton to refinance economic development bond debt from 2019. In a special session, the Lawton City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve the refinancing proposal. Councilman Jay Burk was absent.

LAWTON – Blackwell’s former city manager is Lawton’s new community services and planning director. Janet Smith was recently named to the position, according to a news release from City Manager Michael Cleghorn’s office.

City to require drivers to secure their loads

LAWTON – Lawton’s new ordinance requiring drivers to secure their loads will go into effect Monday. Ordinance 22-4-1-408 mandates that drivers secure and cover all loads to prevent them from blowing away, falling into the road, leaking or escaping from the vehicle.

Lawton to end mask requirement Monday

LAWTON – Starting Monday, the city of Lawton will not require people to wear masks in city-managed buildings. A recent decline in the number of active COVID-19 cases, as reported by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, prompted officials to end the mask requirement as of 8 a.m.

Lawton names new public works deputy

LAWTON – Cynthia Williams, who has worked for the city of Lawton for 18 years, is the city’s new deputy director of public works. Williams joined the city staff in 2003 as an industrial pretreatment compliance officer, the city said Friday in a news release.

LAWTON – Lawton has a new parks and recreation director. Christine James, who has worked for the city for 18 years, served as the interim parks and recreation director in September before accepting the full position this month, the city said Wednesday in a news release.

LAWTON — Lawton has a new public information director.   Kaley Patterson Dorsey was recently named as communications and marketing director for the city of Lawton, according to a news release from City Manager Michael Cleghorn’s office.
